What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, means making your business information clear and useful enough to be named or cited in an AI-generated answer. It overlaps heavily with SEO. Google says its normal SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special files or markup required.

The difference is where the answer appears

Traditional SEO aims to help someone find your page in search results. AEO adds another aim: having the answer itself mention your business or use your page as a source.

For an owner, that distinction matters. A link gives the reader a place to go. An answer may describe your services before the reader visits your website. The description needs to be right.

Neither a ranking nor a citation guarantees a call.

Useful information beats a new label

Start with the questions customers actually ask. For example, a cleaning business could explain whether it handles occupied homes, what customers should prepare, and how to request a booking.

The useful part is the answer. A page that says “contact us for all your cleaning needs” leaves those questions unanswered.

Keep the practical facts consistent, too:

  • Use the same business name and contact details.
  • Describe the services you actually provide.
  • Keep hours and service areas accurate.
  • Make reviews and listings part of the regular information check.

Your Google Business Profile belongs in that work. Someone checking your website against a listing should not have to guess which opening hours are correct.

These are useful maintenance habits, not a promise that an answer engine will recommend you.

Structured data has a limited job

Structured data gives machines a labelled way to read facts on a page. Treat it as another representation of the information customers can see, and keep both versions aligned.

Google explicitly says special markup is unnecessary for its AI features. Adding markup does not create a separate route around ordinary SEO.

FAQ markup also needs an honest explanation. Since August 2023, Google has limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites. For most businesses, an FAQ is useful because it answers questions, not because it produces an expanded search result.

What to do about it

  1. List the questions customers actually ask and answer them in plain text on your own pages.
  2. Check that your name, hours, services and phone number match on your site and your Google Business Profile.
  3. Keep your normal SEO work going, because Google says standard practices apply to its AI features.

Questions

Should I replace SEO with AEO?

No. Google says standard SEO practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clear answers can be part of that same work.

Can an FAQ page still be useful?

Yes. It can explain service limits, booking details, and other questions that would otherwise require a call. Its value does not depend on FAQ rich results.

How PMI handles this

PMI sets up and runs local visibility and AI search work through its Get Found service. Local + AI Search costs $997 setup plus $597/mo and includes service and FAQ content, schema, llms.txt, and monthly checks of what AI tools say.
