What is missed-call text back?

Missed-call text back sends an automatic text when a business does not answer a call. The message goes out from the business number within about a minute and invites the caller to reply. Their response reaches the owner, who can pick up the conversation and help with the request.

From unanswered call to conversation

The useful part is the handoff. Sending a message creates another opening for contact, but someone still needs to handle what comes back.

  1. A caller rings the business and the call is not answered.
  2. The system notices the missed call.
  3. A text goes out from the business number within about a minute.
  4. The caller replies with what they need.
  5. The reply reaches the owner, who continues the conversation.

Make the last step part of the setup. Decide where replies arrive and who checks them while the owner is occupied.

Missed-call text back: from an unanswered call to a conversation A call arrives. If it is answered, the normal call happens. If it is not answered, the system notices, sends a text from the business number within about a minute, the caller replies, and the reply reaches the owner, who continues the conversation. A caller rings the business Is the call answered? Yes: normal call No: the system notices the missed call A text goes out within about a minute Reply reaches the owner, who picks it up
The text opens the conversation. A person still has to read the reply and act on it.

A first text that gives someone a next step

An example:

“Hi, this is [Business name]. Sorry we missed your call. What do you need help with, and what is the best time for us to call you back?”

The message identifies the business, acknowledges the missed call and asks for useful details. It does not pretend someone listened to the call or promise a callback time the owner has not agreed to.

Keep the request easy to answer. The first text does not need to collect every detail required for a quote.

What needs to be in place

Use a text-enabled business number and arrange business texting registration before relying on the service.

For regular US 10-digit numbers, A2P 10DLC registration covers the business brand and messaging campaign, usually through the texting provider. Unregistered business texts to US numbers are blocked. Toll-free numbers have a separate verification process.

Test the whole path: an unanswered call, the outgoing text and the reply arriving where the owner expects it. Check the wording against the actual business name and callback arrangements.

The limits to plan around

This does not answer the original call. Some callers use numbers that cannot receive texts, and a delivered message does not mean the caller will reply.

It also needs a human to pick up the thread. If replies collect somewhere nobody checks, the conversation remains unfinished.

What to do about it

  1. Decide where replies arrive and who checks them while you are working.
  2. Write a first text that names the business and asks what the caller needs.
  3. Test an unanswered call, the text and the reply from start to finish before you rely on it.

Questions

Does this speak to the caller?

No. An AI receptionist handles an answered phone conversation; text back starts after a call goes unanswered.

Can the message promise an immediate callback?

Only use wording the business can honour. Asking for a suitable callback time avoids creating a promise the owner may miss.

How PMI handles this

PMI sets up and runs missed-call text back with Phone + Texting at $129 a month, including 200 minutes and 250 texts. There is no setup fee, and texting goes live after carrier approval, usually in one to three weeks.
