How much does a small business website cost?

DIY builders such as Squarespace list plans from $19 to $139 a month as of October 2026, plus your time. Freelancers and agencies quote custom builds by scope, so prices vary widely. Monthly plans spread the cost. Compare the full commitment, the upkeep included and how enquiries reach you, not the starting price.

Choose the route you can maintain

The right comparison includes your time after launch. A site still needs accurate details, working forms and someone responsible for changes.

The spec of a monthly plan matters more than the label. Work out the total payments over its minimum term. Then establish what you have at the end and what ongoing service still costs.

Put the essentials in the quote

Ask for domain, hosting, SSL and updates to be explicitly covered or priced separately. Clarify who writes the service information and who supplies the images.

Include forms that alert you on your phone. Test the whole route before launch: submit an enquiry, confirm the alert arrives, and check that you can reply using the details captured.

For example, a law office's contact form should not leave a callback request waiting in an inbox nobody checks. Assign someone to receive it and someone to cover when that person is unavailable.

Price the missed enquiry too

A cheap site that gives visitors no clear next step can be expensive to keep. Before approving the design, check whether a visitor can understand the service, confirm you cover their needs and contact you easily.

Track enquiries and what happens afterward. That helps separate a website problem from a response problem. Rebuilding the pages will not fix contact requests that arrive correctly but go unanswered.

Settle ownership and care before paying

Ask who owns the domain and who has access to manage it. Get a written explanation of what happens if you cancel, including what can move to another provider.

Name the person responsible for updates. Agree on how you request a change, how quickly it will be handled and which changes cost extra.

What to do about it

  1. Add up the total payments over any minimum term, and ask what you own at the end.
  2. Get domain, hosting, SSL and updates written into the quote, along with who owns the domain.
  3. Submit a test enquiry before launch and confirm the alert reaches a person.

Questions

Does an upfront build price include ongoing care?

Do not assume it does. Ask separately about hosting, renewals, updates and support after launch.

Is the lowest monthly payment the cheapest option?

Compare the upfront payment, minimum term and included services. A smaller monthly figure alone does not establish the total cost.

How PMI handles this

PMI builds websites and runs their ongoing care on monthly plans, with a Starter site at $99/mo with $0 down or a five-page Business website at $149/mo with $299 down. Monthly plans include domain, hosting, SSL and updates with a 12-month minimum, and every form sends a lead alert to the owner's phone.
